I started smoking in 1968. Over the years I worked my way up to a pack-and-a-half to two packs a day. Every day. I remember telling myself that I'd quit when the cost of cigarettes got to a dollar a pack, then two, then three... I knew I should quit, but I really didn't want to. I liked smoking. I still do

Then, on July 25, 2011, my Mom told me she may have to go on oxygen due to her COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) which, according to her doctor, was the result of her 50 years+ of smoking tobacco. Someone once told me that the definition of insanity was "doing the same things and expecting different results". After that conversation with Mom, the first picture that came into my mind was me dragging around a cart with oxygen on it, tubes and all. Finally being motivated to quit, I told myself, that I could smoke the rest of the day, I could even smoke on the 26th, but on the 27th of July I would quit tobacco permanently.

I won't pretend that it was a snap. After all, I'd smoked for 43 years. I used the patch (as directed) and puffed on Green Smoke electronic cigarettes as a substitute for tobacco cigarettes. Truthfully, the first 5 days were pretty miserable. But, the tobacco had less and less of a hold on me as time went on. As of today (10/17/2011), I have been tobacco free for 83 days.

I really like the Green Smoke brand because for me, it's the most like smoking a real cigarette. And, because of them, I was able to toss the tobacco products for good.
